A Account of Surprising Kindness: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Floor
Back in 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed I would book lodging after getting there, but once I got there, a big convention was taking place and every single youth hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.
As a visitor from Singapore, I considered the possibility of just sleep at the terminal – but soon learned Canberra airport, not like the one back home, closes 24 hours. Not knowing quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I caught public transport and started wandering towards the casino, thinking I might spend the evening in an establishment that stayed open through the night. This was not ideal in the best shape to succeed at a crucial interview the following day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, I couldn’t afford.
We could all use more people who show such kindness.
I must have looked lost as a woman spotted me walking aimlessly through downtown and asked if everything was alright. I shared my situation and immediately she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the floor in her student dorm at ANU – a perfect solution, considering that was where the important interview would take place the next morning. She even offered me some free dinner: one of the filled rolls she brought back her evening job. I was able to use a hot shower and a secure location and safe to sleep.
In retrospect, it’s clear to me the significant risk she undertook as a young woman allowing a guy who was a complete stranger stay in her room. In those days I existed within a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I’m amazed she did that – yet very grateful.
I never did attending ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish karma has rewarded her good deed abundantly. The world needs more folks with such compassion.
