At least 64 people were killed in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's past.

Four police officers lost their lives during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. More than 80 suspects were detained.

Intense confrontations commenced when approximately 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The Red Command countered with shooting, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives stated.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "shocked" by the police operation, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas close to Rio's airport is regarded as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.
