A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 others sustained injuries in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.

The three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were arrested at the site and one more individual who escaped after the incident was apprehended soon after. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene revealed the building left as a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the property was facing an court order due to financial obligations incurred by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member triggered the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander told reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the interior minister said.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of the state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The official believed the blast had occurred on a story above the access point and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the explosion, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being activated”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants told reporters, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
