The fire ripped through the Le Constellation bar in the alpine resort, located in the mountains of south-west Switzerland, in the small hours of the first day of the year. Circulated images reveal the roof structure igniting as bottles with sparklers are held aloft.

Officials have indicated that it could take days if not weeks to identify the those who perished of the fire, which killed four dozen individuals and injured another 119.
