Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership

Corporate Departure
The former official announced he would step back from public positions after legislative body released his repeated correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

The economist remarked in an announcement that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the company, and look forward observing their progress".

The prominent academic, who formerly headed Harvard University, stated on recently that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released emails showed that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of underage individuals.

In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company stated it understood his determination to depart.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the insight he offered to the governing body," OpenAI stated.

Legislative Background

This news arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch voted on recently to pass a measure that would compel the US justice department to release its documents on Epstein.

The measure will afterward head to the desk of the White House for endorsement. He has said he expects to approve the legislation, after modifying his view on the matter following pushback from his followers.

Email Contents

A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence made public by the legislative panel last week referenced several high-profile figures in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The emails revealed that the professor and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often seeking to connect the academic to notable world leaders.

Personal Response

After the emails were shared with the wider community, Summers said he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and fix relationships with the persons closest to me".

Professional History

The economist occupied high-level positions under party leaders; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.

He led the university from five years and is still a professor there. When stating his departure from public commitments recently on Monday, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following his statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal think tank in DC where the professor was a prominent member, announced that Summers was no longer connected with the institution.

The former official entered the directorate of the AI company, which creates the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to oust its top executive the company leader.
