Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Pizza Leader Steps Down After Shift Into Fried Chicken.

The head of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the UK might have reached maximum pizza demand while expanding the chain into fried chicken has been ousted after disagreements with its directors.

Executive Shake-Up

Rennie is leaving after only 24 months in leadership, and will be replaced on an temporary basis by the company's chief operating officer, Nicola Frampton, while the pizza giant searches for a new leader.

Rennie, who worked for the company for a substantial period, had sought to shift Britain's biggest pizza delivery company towards chicken offerings, stating in a recent interview there was not “huge potential” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted chicken was the fastest-growing protein in the world.

Board Tensions

Sources suggest that there was friction between Rennie and the governance team over his approach and management style, although the company's release said he was departing “by mutual agreement”.

New Brand Launch

In September, Domino's introduced its Chick 'N' Dip product line – which Rennie described as a “bold new chapter” for the group – and is piloting it in select stores in the north-west of England and the province.

While the company is still planning to expand it across its extensive network in 2026 as intended, it considers fried chicken as complementary to its primary pizza operations.

Leadership Statement

Ian Bull, the company chairman, said: “The board believes that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and profitability in the main pizza segment. We are prioritizing identifying the right chief executive to lead the systematic rollout of that development approach.”

Industry Challenges

Earlier this month, the pizza delivery giant, which has millions of users in the British Isles, said transactions dipped by 1.5% in the latest quarter. In the summer, it warned that the food delivery sector had “become tougher” as it attributed reduced spending in the run-up to the budget and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a 15 percent decline in interim earnings.

Rival chains are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut revealed the shutting of multiple locations a month ago, after the firm behind its outlets faced financial collapse.

Health Initiatives

Responding to market shifts towards healthier eating, Domino's has introduced light items, such as its light base range of pizzas below 400 calories as well as plant-based and allergy-friendly options. A large pepperoni pizza has over 2,300 kcal. A large cheese and tomato pizza has 2,171, while a small has 909 kcal.

Interim Leadership

Nicola Frampton has been with Domino's since 2021, and was formerly with the betting firm a well-known operator. It is thought that she prefers not to take on the chief executive role on a full-time basis.

Frampton stated: “The company has a number of ongoing expansion and efficiency programs that we will be focused on implementing at a rapid rate.”

Frampton noted these involved further work on the organization's supply chain and product development, and its loyalty scheme.

Domino's is also without a long-term finance director until the spring, when Andrea comes aboard from the beverage producer C&C Group. In the meantime, Snow is interim finance chief.
