Texas Top Legal Officer Sues Acetaminophen Makers Concerning Autism Assertions

Judicial Action
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump campaigning for the United States Senate, accused pharmaceutical manufacturers of hiding potential dangers of Tylenol

The top legal official in Texas Paxton is taking legal action against the makers of acetaminophen, asserting the companies hid potential risks that the medication created to pediatric neurological development.

This legal action comes a month after Former President Trump publicized an unproven link between consuming acetaminophen - also known as paracetamol - while pregnant and autism in offspring.

Paxton is taking legal action against the pharmaceutical giant, which previously sold the drug, the exclusive pain medication recommended for pregnant women, and Kenvue, which currently produces it.

In a declaration, he claimed they "betrayed America by making money from discomfort and promoting medication ignoring the potential hazards."

Kenvue asserts there is insufficient reliable data connecting Tylenol to autism.

"These corporations misled for generations, intentionally threatening millions to boost earnings," Paxton, a Republican, declared.

Kenvue stated officially that it was "very worried by the spread of false claims on the security of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the well-being of American women and children."

On its official site, the company also stated it had "regularly reviewed the applicable studies and there is insufficient valid information that indicates a established connection between using acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Groups speaking for doctors and healthcare providers concur.

The leading OB-GYN organization has declared acetaminophen - the primary component in Tylenol - is a restricted selection for expectant mothers to treat discomfort and fever, which can create significant medical dangers if not addressed.

"In multiple decades of studies on the consumption of paracetamol in gestation, no reliable research has conclusively proven that the use of paracetamol in any stage of gestation causes neurodevelopmental disorders in children," the organization stated.

The lawsuit references latest statements from the previous government in arguing the drug is reportedly hazardous.

In recent weeks, Trump generated worry from medical authorities when he told women during pregnancy to "fight like hell" not to take acetaminophen when sick.

The FDA then published an announcement that doctors should think about restricting the use of acetaminophen, while also declaring that "a direct connection" between the medication and autism in children has remains unverified.

Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, who oversees the FDA, had vowed in spring to initiate "a massive testing and research effort" that would establish the origin of autism in a limited time.

But authorities warned that finding a single cause of autism spectrum disorder - thought by researchers to be the outcome of a complicated interplay of inherited and surrounding conditions - would be difficult.

Autism is a type of lifelong neurodivergence and impairment that impacts how people experience and interact with the environment, and is diagnosed using medical professional evaluations.

In his court filing, the attorney general - aligned with the former president who is campaigning for the Senate - asserts Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson "intentionally overlooked and tried to quiet the research" around acetaminophen and autism.

The case aims to force the firms "destroy any promotional materials" that asserts Tylenol is secure for women during pregnancy.

This legal action echoes the grievances of a group of guardians of minors with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who sued the makers of Tylenol in 2022.

A federal judge threw out the legal action, stating studies from the parents' expert witnesses was lacking definitive proof.
