The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Blocked Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the co-founders behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that established the company with his partner, revealed that he will personally create the controversial product within a personal series showcasing causes the company was prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders and Corporate Owner
This latest development intensifies the continuing conflict among the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain that Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen stated through an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become an emblem for support for Palestinians because of its colors, which closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism plus Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever selling the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
This upcoming product line is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally created several years back for endorsing former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated that he plans to develop additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence had been undermined following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise the social mission, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
