The Manager Enzo Maresca Describes Pre-Match Period as His 'Most Difficult Two Days' with the Blues
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca revealed that the build-up to the weekend's triumph against Everton represented "the most challenging 48 hours" of his tenure at Stamford Bridge.
The 44-year-old offered a somewhat cryptic statement in his after-game media briefing even after earning a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge courtesy of strikes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those three precious points propelled Chelsea once again into the English top flight's top four, perhaps lightening the mood following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's drought without a win to four outings.
Yet, when questioned about Gusto's contribution and overall display, Maresca surprisingly disclosed his frustration over the previous 48-hour period within the club.
"How the lads want to develop has been superb and this is the reason why I commend them - because with numerous problems, they are excelling after a complicated week," he stated.
"Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst because several people withheld support from us."
Pressed on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City boss continued: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When asked if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he replied: "Broadly speaking. In general," before clarifying when queried if it was directed towards supporters or the press: "I adore the fans and we are extremely pleased with the fans."
Injury and Suspension Woes
Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent injury and suspension issues, noting they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for much of the campaign, as well as losing key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and striker Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.
"I truly applaud the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them minus Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, no matter who is playing, they are performing fantastic. Today was 5 games in 12 days so for sure when you see Cole Palmer there, we have said many times that he's our finest player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our best player.
"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would want people outside to appreciate because the work from the players is fantastic."
Chelsea's win over Everton strengthened their position in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled next week.
Speculation Over Maresca's Remark
It was unclear who or what prompted Maresca to describe the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea manager.
In that window, the Italian had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, held a session at the training ground, faced a pre-match news conference where he seemed at ease, and secured a victory over an high-flying Everton side.
It was hard to discern whether any specific media reports had irked him, if social media discourse were a factor, or if it was something deeper from within the club at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca specifically took care to deny that it was an matter related to the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
