Whenever a teenage makes Real Madrid history in a pivotal Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He signed for Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," added he. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.

Under international regulations, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team pursue trophies to come.

After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must earn my minutes on the field," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
