The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
