The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us verify the video.
Our team is analyzing images and video posted earlier today that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the location from which the images were from was based on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
