UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a young woman containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.

A World of Personal Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to each person."

The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms where their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
