What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
